Best young talent 23-year old Art Director Leah Mammoliti

Australasian Catalogue Awards

What did you think when you found out you had been nominated for Best Young Talent?
I felt extremely grateful that my colleagues felt that I was deserving of the award. I actually didn’t realise that I had been entered at first, so when I was told I was a finalist, it made it even more exciting.

Art Director Vs Designer…. And go!
There’s a bit of a blurred line between the role of an Art Director and a Designer – the jobs overlap quite a bit. I think the main difference is that a designer’s focus is purely on visual design – making the work look pretty. An Art Director, on the other hand, is not only responsible for making sure the work looks visually appealing, but also for coming up with creative concepts and ideas.

I usually start off by being given a creative brief with a problem to solve. I then spend time working with a copywriter, bouncing ideas off each other and pulling together a creative solution. And then when it comes to actually executing the idea, I put my designer hat on.

You’re super young! What’s the career dream?
I think my dream would be to work on a campaign that wins an award at Cannes Lions – that would be amazing! Hopefully I can get there one day. In the meantime, my goal is to develop my skills and learn as much as I can from the people I work with.

This win came with a nice bit of money, what are you going to spend it on?
Yes, the money was a very nice surprise! I’m definitely going to be putting it towards a holiday.
I’ve been wanting to travel around Europe for such a long time, and now I can finally start planning.

What’s the absolute best thing about Agency Life?
There’s a lot I love about agency life. The absolute best thing would have to be that I get to be creative in my work and do what I love. Whether I’m working on a conceptual job or one that’s more design focused, every project is so different and a great creative outlet. I also love the culture of Redhanded – there’s always such a fun and energising vibe in the agency that makes coming into work all the more rewarding.
